Turkey Hunting Supplies

When about to take off on a turkey hunting trip, it would be wise to assemble a checklist of things to take before you go. This way you will know you are not missing anything and you can add things to it as you go along. Basic supplies when hunting are similar among the particular types of hunting (deer, turkey, duck, etc.), so make sure to check out other articles on hunting before you go, not specifically turkey hunting. When turkey hunting, these should be included in a survival kit:

  • Different Sized Band aids
  • Peroxide swabs
  • Iodine swabs
  • Water purifying tablets
  • Matches in a water tight bag
  • Aluminum foil
  • A small knife
  • A fire starter kit
  • 2 Survival candles
  • A map of where you are hunting
  • Some disposable ear plugs
  • Snack food
  • 20 feet of fishing line
  • 2-3 spinners or small lures
  • A lighter

All of these items should be put in a small, water tight container. Either a heavy duty zip-lock bag or a coffee can will work just fine. This small survival kit will easily fit inside most backpacks or knapsacks and could end up saving your life if you are stranded for an unforeseen amount of time when turkey hunting.

Other supplies that should be brought with you in the field include:

  • A larger sharpened knife
  • A flashlight with fresh batteries and spares
  • A hunting license
  • A compass
  • A seat cushion
  • Hand warmers and gloves
  • A water bottle
  • A thermos
  • A First-aid kit
  • Weapon of choice (rifle, bow, shotgun)
  • Plenty of ammunition
  • Rain gear
  • Cellular phone

All of the items previously listed should be taken on almost any day trip when hunting. Supplies more specific to turkey hunting include:

  • Turkey calls
  • A decoy, if desired
  • Masking scent
  • A couple of pieces of nylon leggings cut at about four feet (keep the foot, and cut up around thigh—I've heard this is a good way to keep the turkey without messing with the feathers until it can get to the taxidermist)
  • Hat (check blaze orange requirements)

When turkey hunting, be aware that there will most likely be other hunters around, especially in public hunting places. Never wave at another hunter when turkey hunting, perhaps bring a whistle with you in case you get lost or feel pinned down by other hunters. Safety goes both ways: always double-check your target before taking a shot - no bird is worth accidentally injuring, maiming or even killing a fellow hunter. When turkey hunting, plan ahead, bring the proper supplies (my list is not exhaustive, it should get you started though), be safe, be familiar with local hunting regulations, tell someone where you are going, and - last but not least - have fun!
