Duck Hunting Supplies

Duck hunting is a great way to enjoy the fall and winter months (depending on the time of duck hunting season in your area). Before duck hunting, you should be prepared for any type of weather and should have a detailed checklist of supplies. The supplies listed hereafter share similarities with deer hunting and turkey hunting as an emergency supply kit will not change among different animals. Calls, camouflage, weapons, dogs, etc. will change depending on your particular hunt of choice. Emergency supplies should fit in a waterproof container (i.e. a ziplock bag or a coffee can) and include:

  • Different Sized Band Aids
  • Peroxide Swabs
  • Iodine Swabs
  • Water Purifying Tablets
  • Matches in a Water Tight Bag
  • Aluminum Foil
  • A Small Knife
  • A Fire Starter Kit
  • 2 Survival Candles
  • A Map of your Hunting Grounds
  • Some Disposable Ear Plugs
  • Snack Food
  • 20 Feet of Fishing Line
  • 2-3 Spinners or Small Lures
  • A Lighter

These supplies will keep you warm, fed and hydrated long enough to travel to civilization or hook back up with your duck hunting party. A cellular phone would easily end your woes, but no one can guarantee you will get reception or have enough battery for an entire duck hunting trip, so a back-up plan in the form of an emergency supply kit is a must.

Other larger supplies that should be brought along when duck hunting include:

  • A Larger Sharpened Knife
  • A Flashlight with Fresh Batteries and Spares
  • A Hunting License
  • A Compass
  • A Seat Cushion
  • Hand Warmers and Gloves
  • A Water Bottle
  • A Thermos
  • A First-Aid Kit
  • Weapon (for ducks a rifle/shotgun)
  • Plenty of Ammunition (spread shot)
  • Rain Gear
  • Cellular Phone

These supplies should be put in a duffel bag, a backpack, or a knapsack along with some empty ziplock bags to keep particular items dry while in the field duck hunting. If you think of anything else important, be sure to add it to your checklist and bring it along. These are merely suggestions, not by any means a complete list of everything you will need. There are enough supplies here to keep you more prepared than other hunters however.

Particular duck hunting supplies include:

  • Duck calls
  • A decoy, if desired
  • Masking scent
  • Nylon leggings cut at the thigh to tie off and store a duck (or use a plastic bag) before taking it to the taxidermist
  • A blind (to conceal yourself)
  • A well-trained hunting dog to stir and retrieve ducks

Always use extreme caution when duck hunting. Recent high-profile duck hunting accidents are indicative of how dangerous hunting can be if hunters are not cautious. Don't drink before or while duck hunting and keep your gun aimed well above the horizon to further prevent accidental injuries. Always be aware of other hunters and follow all local hunting rules and regulations. Remember: a safe hunting season is a successful one! Be sure to check the weather and tell at least one person where you are going before you take off to hunt. Other than that have a good time enjoying the brisk weather with your family, friends, and fellow hunters!
