Hunting Footwear

Hunting footwear comes in many different styles and variations, each made for hunting in certain conditions. Hunting footwear can be expensive so it is important to know what you are looking for before you make a purchase to get your money's worth.

For hunting in colder temperatures, look to buy insulated boots with a waterproof lining such as GORE-TEX or something similar. These boots should lace up rather high and fit under your hunting pants. Buying boots that are too short could nullify the waterproof benefits of the boots by allowing snow to get in the top of the boot and make a wet mess for your feet and socks. In cold temperatures this is especially undesirable; insulation should prevent the water from freezing. But when hunting for prolonged periods of time in water, you want your feet dry to avoid skin irritation and water logging. Water can seep into hunting footwear that has been used for too many years. If this is happening to your boots, it is time to think about buying new ones. When buying new boots, be sure to ask about a particular style's durability–a boot's longevity will save you money and keep you comfortable in the long run.

If hunting in warmer climates, it is important to make sure your boots are breathable. A build up of perspiration on the inside of hunting footwear will decrease comfort just as much as getting water inside. Look to find a happy medium between breath-ability and the waterproof characteristics for hunting footwear in warm temperatures.

The weight of hunting footwear will affect your ability to move quickly in an agile and silent manner. The weight of a boot should be taken into consideration along with its comfort and its traction. Traction is important for good footing as well as quick and efficient movement.

Remaining stealth while hunting will determine your level of success. Today hunting footwear comes camouflaged, so keep that in mind when coordinating your outfit with your boots. Whether or not your shoes are camouflaged may seem to make little difference if you are hunting from the ground, but when you are in the trees it is possible for conspicuous boots to give you away. Hunting footwear can also come with scent protection. This is important for hunting footwear that might smell (good or bad), as any smell can give away your presence and scare off hunted animals.
